NO TENSION!
…Coach Bosso tells Nigerians as his boys prepare to slug it out with Sudan in the AYC qualifier in Abuja.
It is indeed a season of surprises, especially with the unpleasant exit of Coach Alphonsus Dike’s Golden Eaglets from the Under-17 African Championship. Coach Ladan Bosso has therefore found it expedient to allay the fears of Nigerians, as he strongly believes his boys will give Nigeria a ticket to the next youth championship in Egypt.
Bosso is very much aware of the consequences that follow failures especially in a football-loving country like Nigeria, and has therefore assured the nation of his ability to beat Sudan this weekend and qualify the team for the biannual tournament. He is confident that the quality of players he has assembled will not let him down.
In fact, he is happy that the boys that lifted the last FIFA World Under-17 trophy in Korea are the backbones of his team, but he quickly stated that they would not underrate the Sudanese.
"No tension!" Bosso boasted. "We are ready for the Sudanese.
"I am assuring Nigerians that we will not let the nation down in this encounter. We will take our chances as they come so as not to blame ourselves when the return leg comes up in Khartoum.
"We have learnt our lessons from the Golden Eaglets’ failure in Benin Republic and we shall not allow that scenario to repeat itself in our case. Though the team (Eaglets) did their best, they met a more determined Benin side that took their chances as they came. Football is all about scoring goals and gaining the maximum points and we shall be guided by this philosophy."
I have good players in the team, who can tear apart any defence no matter how tight it might be. My strikers are hungry for goals. They are the bulk of players that won the last World Under-17 trophy with the late Coach Yemi Tella in South Korea. And I am happy that one of the managers of that squad is part of us in the person of Ben Iroha. Iroha is grounded in youth football management and he has the qualities of a good coach. With him, I believe the sky will be our starting point."
"The players are now matured. They now understand what it means to wear the national colours. And I pray that the commitment will continue so that we shall not only aim at becoming the best in Africa, but also in the world when the World Youth Championship kicks off. All we need now is the support of Nigerians. They should come out and support the players. They should put behind them the disappointment of the Eaglets for not qualifying to defend the trophy they won in Togo two years ago, because football is a game where you win some and lose some."
Bosso also revealed: "I want to state here that we are still scouting for young talents to be part of the team. And as we march forward in this qualification series, we shall incorporate them into the team. We will do that without minding where the players are coming from. The criteria for bringing additional players into the team are commitment and hard work," he concluded.
We wish them the very best this weekend !
