Vice President Jonathan, has reaffirmed Nigeria's determination to host the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup, saying the country was doing everything possible to ensure that facilities needed for the competition was ready on schedule.
In a speech delivered on his behalf by the Acting Director-General of the National Sports Council (NSC), Patrick Ekeji, at the 31st CAF general assembly, Jonathan assured the global football community that Nigeria will be ready to host the FIFA U-17 World Cup later this year: "We appreciate the observations of the recent FIFA inspection team, observations made without any malice. I wish to assure this gathering that come October, Nigeria will be ready to stage a superb FIFA U-17 World Cup finals".
At the congress held yesterday at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Issa Hayatou, was returned unopposed to the seat he has occupied for the past 21 years.
In an event attended by the cream of the world's leading football personalities, including FIFA President, Joseph Sepp Blatter, Hayatou was declared fit to continue running the affairs of CAF by the delegates from across the continent.
The Assembly also had in attendance the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), and Ekeji, who represented the Vice -President of the Federal Republic, Chief (Dr) Goodluck Jonathan.
