4 Universities to Offer Masters Degree in Nuclear Science, Engineering - DG

Four Nigerian universities are to offer masters degree programme in nuclear science and engineering from next academic year, according to Erepamo Osaisai, Director-General, Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission (NAEC).

He made the announcement on Saturday in Abuja at the end of a training programme in nuclear science and engineering, organised for 49 staff of the commission.

A statement by Vincent Otu, the commission’s Head of Public Information, quoted Osaisai as saying that the four national universities were those hosting nuclear energy research centres.

He said the construction of a well equipped and fitted researchers’ hostel and conference centre had reached advanced stage at the Nuclear Technology Centre (NTC), Sheda, Abuja to facilitate the training of nuclear scientists and engineers in the country.

Osaisai expressed optimism that in the next 10 years, participants at the training programme would have grown to become mature professionals in the sector.

He said the construction of nuclear power plants in the country would commence only when the requisite framework for growing adequate manpower needed to run the plants in a sustainable way had been properly put in place.

The director-general stressed that the commission had committed adequate resources to the recruitment and training of competent Nigerian professionals in the sector.

He said government must learn from previous experiences when large industrial facilities were conceived and built, but without competent manpower to operate them.
