The cause of the Saturday’s air mishap at the Yakubu Gown Airport, Jos, has not been ascertained, Nehemiah Auta, the Airport Manager, has said.
"The cause of the crash has yet to be ascertained, but the relevant aviation agencies are carrying out investigations to unravel the cause," he told the News Agency of Nigeria, on Monday, in Jos.
The manager explained that Aero Contractor was engaging a construction company with heavy-duty equipment to tow the aircraft away from the runway to the tarmac.
“But that will be after investigations,’’ he said.
He explained that a team of investigators from the Accident Investigative Bureau (AIB) from Abuja and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) team from Kaduna had arrived the airport to investigate the cause of the crash.
Mr Auta also said that engineers from Aero, expected from Lagos to assess the damage done to the aircraft, had yet to arrive “probably due to the inability of any aircraft to land in Jos.’’
However, a statement from the airline attributed the cause of the crash landing to the fact that two of its nose tyres burst as they skidded on the wet tarmac.
A source at the airport also corroborated this in an interview with the news agency.
The source said the aircraft had touched down properly at about 6 p.m. before it veered off the runway and attributed the mishap to either the wet surface of the runway or ``low-level wind shear”.
“The aircraft landed well and the captain should be commended for manoeuvring it to a halt thereby averting what could have been a disaster,” he said.
“The engine of the aircraft is not damaged and not much damage was done to the aircraft except its two tyres and the two crew nosed wheels. Not much damage was done to our equipment as well."
