The opening matches of the African contenders in the ongoing FIFA World Cup finals have been played with all six teams taking to the pitch.
At the end of round one, the performance the African representatives have arguably been unsatisfactory and left much to be desired.
All five African teams scored a total of two goals and conceded five (did I hear you exclaim, "...oh dear me, what a shame!").
The two goals were scored by two teams - South Africa in the opening game against Mexico that ended in a 1-1 draw and Ghana.
Ghana during their first group game beat Serbia by 1-0 gaining the available three points for the first match.
South Africa and Cote d’Ivoire each obtained a draw in their games; so both teams each share one point with the opponents.
Algeria opened the spell of defeats, Nigeria followed in the same pattern and the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon followed suit.
All three teams suffered a one – zero defeat; a score which observers say is not so heavy but should push the African sides to work harder.
The Indomitable Lions, presently classified by FIFA as the best African football squad, failed to prevail over the Japanese side.
Observers say, the fighting spirit of the lions was absent during their first outing.
As the second round begins this 16th day of June 2010, there are expectations that the host country, South Africa which plays against Uruguay shall register a victory that will rekindle hope within the entire continent.
