Project, formerly led by the World Bank, now independent, to build world-class degree programs for the education of scientists, technicians,engineers, business managers, health care providers, and other professionals. "The AVU will offer university degree programs in science, technology, and medical fields; noncredit training and seminars; remedial instruction; and electronic library services". Lectures by professors in the US and Europe will be sent by satellite to African universities. The film library was founded in 1989 in connection with the FESPACO film festival in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The FESPACO official web site also has issues of the FESPACO Newsletter and FESPACO News (1997) , the latter issued only during the film festival. No. 9-1997 lists the film award winners at the 15th 1997 FESPACO.

Ford Foundation. Secrets of the Sahara. By Christopher Reardon
Secrets of the Sahara is a well-written account of efforts by Mali scholars to preserve manuscripts from the 14th century onwards. "Dozens of families in Timbuktu are working to preserve a trove of ancient manuscripts that may redefine the history of Islam and Africa." "Many of the ancient texts date back to the Songhaï empire, a prosperous kingdom that peaked in the 15th and 16th centuries." Topics cover "astronomy, mathematics, medicine and geography. There are poems and folk tales."
